I am sorry that this has taken me so long to get out; the next newsletter may as well as I have a lot of things involved with moving across town. But I know this teaching will help many. Please bear with me as we lay some ground word for our teaching on the soul.

DEFINITIONS

First let’s look at some basic definitions of the word SOUL. I think you will be amazed at what we discover. (All scripture is New King James unless otherwise stated.)

Ø       Strong’s defines Soul as the immortal part of a man. (Interesting that we are called to win “souls”.)

Ø       The Word used throughout the Old Testament for Soul is Nephesh Strong’s 5315 – a breathing creature or animal, appetite or desires, breath, ghost, heart, life, lust, mind, mortality, self or will.

Nephesh comes from 5314 Naphash to breath or be breathed upon; refreshed as by a current of air. This is first used in Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. [This word for ‘being’ is Nephesh or soul.]

Interesting to note that Angels are called spirits. Hebrews 1:7 And of the angels He says: "Who makes His angels spirits And His ministers a flame of fire." Angels are spirits. I believe that animals are souls as shown in the Strong’s definition above and in verses like:
·         Leviticus 24:18 'Whoever kills an animal shall make it good, animal for animal. [The words ‘animal for animal’ are Nephesh for animal or soul for soul.]
·         Genesis 1:24 Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: [Living Creature is Nephesh or soul. It is the same meaning in Genesis 1:21; 2:19; 9:10, 12, 15, 16 and Lev. 11:46]
·         Revelation 8:9 And a third of the living creatures in the sea died…[Again this is soul or the Greek word for soul which is Psuche (same in Rev. 16:3)]

So my ‘theory’ [notice it is not a doctrine but something to make you think] is that Angels are spirit only and Animals are soul and body only. A soul is a will, desires, feelings, thoughts, etc. and animals display those soul aspects. Animals do not have the soul that is the breath of God like man does. That is unique to man because man was made in God’s image and from God’s image, His soul. Animals were not. I believe that ONLY man has spirit, soul and body. Our Spirit, Soul and Body correspond to the image of God, who is Spirit, Soul and Body or Father, Son and Holy Ghost. It is not a coincidence but a revelation that we are made to conform to His three-part image and be a part of Him. John 17:21 "that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.

We are spirit, soul and body but in order to become one with the Father God through Jesus Christ, by His Holy Spirit we must be one ourselves first. We see that in the story of “I Gave You My Name” (in the previous newsletter seen at: http://www.goldenministries.org/newsletters/LATEST%20-%20newsletter_49_The_Soul%20Part%201%20-%209.20.05.html) The purpose of the first part of the journey was to become one; a team (spirit, soul and body) that could work together. To work together they needed to understand each other’s weaknesses and strengths and help each other. They needed to learn not to be afraid of each other and not to hurt each other. They had to learn to be a part of the pack with a leader. Sometimes we are most afraid of ourselves and we are our own worst enemies. To know ourselves at the level that we need to know ourselves requires God’s help. Often we cannot know our own spirit. We need to know our cravings come from that spirit and not just the flesh. The flesh is a follower as is shown in his name, which was Simon, which means to hear and obey or the character of a slave or servant. He is the slave of the spirit and soul. If your flesh has a problem the root is most likely in the spirit or soul. But we will talk about that more later.

Angels do not have a soul. That is why Peter says in: 1 Peter 1:12… who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven -- things which angels desire to look into.

Angels are curious about us because we are so different from them. We are unique and we need to know it. We were made different. We are not JUST spirit and we are not JUST soul, we are the only creation that like God is made up of three parts: Spirit, Soul and Body. That is because we were especially created to interface – become one with - God and to fellowship with Him as His children or the little ones that are like Him that He can relate to and share His life with.

We need to know that this is our inheritance and what we were created for and that is what the enemy of our “soul” is trying to keep us from. Let’s lay hold of this revelation. We can become one with God as His children. That is our inheritance and our God destiny. He didn’t just fill us with life He filled us with ‘His’ life and breath. 1 Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being (Psuche)." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. Jesus as the 2nd Adam became the life giving spirit for us in order that we could become a part of God as we were meant to be before time began.

  • Ephesians 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,
  • 2 Timothy 1:9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,
  • Titus 1:2 in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,

God has a plan for you and it is good. KJV Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD thoughts of peace, and not of evil to give you an expected end. In this plan for us we see the original design for our Psuche – soul. Even though we have deviated from these blueprints, through the Holy Spirit we can assuredly return to it.  Thessalonians 5:23-24 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

God has a plan and He will do it. He knows the beginning from the end “for your life’, Isaiah 46:10. He can bring our Spirit, Soul and Body into unity and make them one but that is not the end purpose, the end purpose is then to become one with His Spirit, Soul and Body through Christ Jesus our Lord. That is His plan for our Psuche before time and for all time. And He will get us back on track to that.

When God breathed into us and gave us a soul from His soul it was a certain kind of breath. The word breathed used in Gen. 2:7 is from 5301 Naphach – to inflate or blow hard, puff. It speaks of a forceful breath and not a gentle breath. Breath also used in that verse is 5397 a puff, wind, vital breath, divine inspiration, intellect, soul. He forcefully blew a soul into us. He inflated us with some of Himself.

Dake’s defines Soul as a man possessing appetites, mental faculties, feelings, emotional desires and passions. Hence he says the soul that feels and the spirit of the man that knows.  Dake’s further says that the soul and spirit make the inner man – it encompasses feelings, will, knowledge and intellect. (This is going to be important to remember moving forward.) He states that Death is the Nephesh being cut off from God. Death means separation not annihilation. It is the part that is lost that must be saved.

The Spirit Filled Life Bible Defines Soul like this – A life, living being, soul, “self” person, mind, personality, inner desires and feelings. It can be the heart… and mind. God has a soul and from that He gave us a soul. Jeremiah 5:9…says the LORD. "And shall I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this? [The word for Myself is Nephesh. God has a Nephesh – soul.]  Amos 6:8 The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself…” [The Lord has sworn by His Nephesh. God has a soul.]

Even in the New Testament quoting God from Isaiah’s prophecy, Matthew 12:18 "Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased!

Still quoting from the Spirit Filled Life Bible’s definitions, The Greek word that corresponds to Nephesh is Psuche – 5590 (we get words like psychology and psychiatry from this. The study of our inner man.) Psuche distinguishes soul from the body. Soul is the seat of affections, will, desire, emotions, mind, reason, and understanding. Psuche is our inner self, the essence of life. Psuche is not dissolved by death. They further state that - Body and Spirit can be separated but Spirit and Soul can only be distinguished.

Vines Commentary says, Psuche is the heart, life, mind, soul. Ephesians 6:6… doing the will of God from the heart, (the word for heart is Psuche or the Soul).

Colossians 3:23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, (heartily is psuchē-ek – with all of your soul.)

Matthew 6:25 " Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life (Psuche), what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life (Psuche) more than food and the body more than clothing? Don’t worry about your inner well being, that is your true life and it is safe when it is in Christ.

Revelation 12:11 … and they did not love their lives (Psuche) to the death. That makes the meaning so different. To lay down your physical life to die is one thing but to lay down you Psuche is to lay down your will, desires, thoughts, reasoning, affections and feelings. Wow!

Compare Leviticus 17:11 'For the life (Nephesh) of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls (Nephesh); for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul (Nephesh).' The blood is the container of the Nephesh, the soul. In the Old Testament it covered sin so the price would not be demanded. It made atonement. But the greater price was paid of Jesus’ blood, our sins are not just atoned or covered anymore but they are completely blotted out and removed. They are not just hidden but the debt of the sin canceled. But if the Blood is a holder for the Nephesh, the soul, then it is Jesus’ life essence that covers and cleanses us from sin. That is why “knowing” the Lord is so important.

Isaiah 53:10 & 12 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You(God) make His soul an offering for sin…Because He poured out His soul unto death. Jesus poured out His Nephesh (soul) by His Blood, which made our Nephesh (soul) clean. By the righteousness in His Nephesh He cleansed and imparted righteousness to ours.

This brings a new meaning to partaking of the Lord’s Supper. We now realize we are partaking of the very life of Christ, not just the Blood but what the Blood houses, which is the Lord’s will, desires, feelings, attitude, etc. It is Jesus’ soul that we are partaking of that makes a great change in our soul nature. We are not just left to be driven in the wind of who we are and life’s circumstances and say oh well I was just made that way and there is nothing I can do. What is impossible for us is possible with the Lord. He has already made provision to change the unchangeable part in us by sacrificing that part of Himself as well and then through communion making that available to us to partake of. We just need to realize it and receive it.

We already know that Psuche (Soul) encompasses our will, desires, feelings, attitudes, etc. but Vines also says the Psuche is the seat of our personality. This word is often translated life. Realizing what this word means will cause us to look at certain scriptures differently, for example: Luke 9:24-25 "For whoever desires to save his life (Psuche) will lose it, but whoever loses his life (Psuche) for My sake will save it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself (Psuche) destroyed or lost? We must lay down our Psuche, our will desires, personality, feelings, etc.

Luke 11:42 "But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. My dear friend Brother Brent Crow, who I love to study with, brought this point to light. God was angry that the Pharisees tithed physical things (which of course we know that we should), but they did not give of their heart and inner life to the Lord. This was external giving without giving of and from the Psuche and we must not be guilty of that. That’s why the Lord loves a cheerful giver, because that is giving from the inside and the outside.

There are two words used for life in the New Testament, zoe for the life force of that being and Psuche for the soul or self life, both must be given to the Lord not just the zoe. Psalm 66:9 God …Which holds our soul in life. Soul would be like the Psuche and Life would be the zoe. John 10:10-11…I (Jesus) have come that they may have life (zoe), and that they may have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life (Psuche-soul) for the sheep. Jesus laid down not only His physical life but His Psuche, His will, desires, feelings, His inner self.

John 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life (Psuche) for his friends. Like Jesus we are required to love not our lives (Psuche, will desires, feelings, self) to the death as we saw in Rev. 12:11. Not just killing the mortal body but laying down the inner man as well and not only for the Lord but for others. When we realize that life means our soul, plans, desires, will, etc. that makes those scriptures appear different.

Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life (Psuche) also, he cannot be My disciple. I used to think that was a misinterpretation that God surely didn’t mean hate but now I realize He did mean exactly that. You must hate your own will and way enough to forsake it and give it all to the Lord for His. It is not just words you say but something you give and walk in all your life. You then pick up His life to walk in His ways and His desires. We were made for His good pleasure not our own. And you can’t choose your earthly father’s ways or desires as many have or your spouse’s or children’s, etc., only God’s way and desires. When you give your life to the Lord you must never take it back by doing what you want with it but allow Him to keep it by lining up with His ways inside and out. How many youth have a I talked to that are going to college in spite of the fact that God told them to do something else but the parents want them to… There parents have taken a position greater than God’s because they obey them first. That is a great danger but the greatest danger is our own heart and mind.

Philippians 4:7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. God’s peace (Jesus is the Prince of Peace and gives us His peace) will guard our hearts and minds from leaving God’s ways and desires (God’s soul path for our soul) to our own but we must allow Him to do that in us. Isaiah 57:18 I have seen his ways, and will heal him; God will heal our ways.

Hebrews 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, Not an anchor for our soul but an anchor “of” our soul. Something in us we allow the Lord to develop in us that cause a great hope to anchor us in Christ. That is God’s Soul ways and desires. He builds His character and presence into us. If you read the story about the Lizzard “Too Much” in my newsletter on “The Purpose of Suffering” you saw that our very nature has to change. What is that nature but our inner self-ways or our Psuche. God will do it but we must let Him.

Let’s look at a few other definitions of Psuche from Vines. I will not list things we have already covered.
  1. The immaterial – invisible part of man. Matthew 10:28 "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul (Psuche). But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul (Psuche) and body in hell. The inner eternal part of our being called the Psuche.
  2. The disembodied – (spiritually naked man [not clothed by God’s glory or covered by the Blood of Jesus]) 2 Corinthians 5:4 For we who are in this tent (our body) groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life (Psuche).
  3. Seat of Sentiment – That which perceives, reflects, desires and feels. When we say our perception or reality needs to change it is a soul change that requires God’s help.
  4. Seat of the Will and Purposes – This is major, we have a will and if our inner will is not totally submitted to the Lord, with His help, we have a very serious problem. We can as the old saying goes say, “Yes I will stand up and even stand up on the outside, but on the inside we are sitting down and rebelling.” What does God see? Does He see what we did, only if there was a change of heart with it, He sees our heart attitude. That is why Jesus said, Matthew 5:28 "But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. When you sin in your soul it is the true sin and God sees it. Don’t let that alarm you, the Lord will help us change, Thes. 5:23-24. But we must let Him.
Seat of the Appetite – Of course that means more than food. Dieting is like plucking the blossom off a rose bush and saying the bush is gone. Is it? No, because the bush is still there, roots and all. We must find out why we overeat and let God deal with that and heal our soul realm. Psalm 41:4 I said, "LORD, be merciful to me; Heal my soul…Psalms 23:3 He restores my soul. It takes a diligent process to allow the Lord to work a deep inner healing in our soul but He will do it. Our soul has many crutches, often we feel like God is going to jerk our crutch away and then because we have only a little strength we will fall but the Lord who created you knows what you are ready for and what you are not and He will not remove anything you are “really” not ready to have removed. He will not make you fall. When that part of you is healed and He can remove the crutch without endangering you, He will help you let go of the crutch to show you that you no longer need it.  1Kings 19:4 Elijah the great prophet throws himself under a tree and prays to die. Why? He discovered a failing he had that ‘he’ couldn’t overcome. But God knew about that failing all along. God knew about that failing when He used Elijah mightily to call down fire from heaven, it was only a “new” discovery to Elijah. Don’t let your revelation of your problem and your inability to change it discourage you, God knew about it all along and has been waiting for the right moment to help you through it, let Him. 1 Thessalonians 5:24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
  1. Seat of Self – Your individuality and who you are. You like to paint and you like chocolate but you don’t like peppers. That self is like soft clay to start with, everyone around you wants to get their hands in your soft clay but it is only for God to shape. Hardened  clay must be ground to powder and then made wet and pliable again. We gave our individuality to Jesus, It is Christ in us the hope of glory. Col. 1:27
  2. Personal pronouns – Myself, himself, yourself, me, he and you. Often when you see a self-word it is Psuche or Nephesh and means more than it appears to mean.
  3. An animated creature, human or otherwise. Like living creatures, animals, etc. They have a Psuche but as we said it was not created from a piece of the Nephesh of God but created separately.
  4. Inner Man – the inner most being, the Seat of our New Life.
Let’s look at some other ways Psuche is used that may enlighten us a bit further:

When James talks about double mindedness making a man unstable in all of his ways in James 1:8 the word double minded is di-psuchos – two-souled. This means a divided soul and the Lord cannot join to a house divided against itself, such a house will fall. Only the Lord can mend a divided soul, if we have that problem we need to let Him begin a process to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. Because even though all the King’s horses and all the King’s men can’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again (our soul) the Lord most assuredly can.  Luke 1:37 For with God nothing will be impossible.

1 Thessalonians 5:14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. Fainthearted is cligo-psuchos, which means weak souled. Some people especially new Christians are fainthearted. Don’t discourage them further by criticizing them, but uphold the weak souls. The chain is only as strong as the weakest link. So learn to strengthen the weakest link for the good of the whole.

Philippians 2:2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. The words one accord: are sum-psuchose and it means joint-souled. When we think of being in one accord we think of just being in agreement but it is much more than that, the will, desires, emotions and God focus are in harmony, not only on the outside but on the inside. When this one accord happens the Lord can do great things. It is laying down our self focus and will to focus on what the Lord wants in unity with others as a whole. Laying down our lives for others in order to join with them to lay our lives down together for the Lord; lives meaning Psuche.

We have read and heard much lately about bad soul-ties and how to break them but did you realize that there needs to be good soul-ties to replace them, like the Apostles and believers were in Acts. In Acts 2:1 it was this same ‘one accord’ (a group of joined souls focused on the Lord) that brought the rushing mighty wind of Pentecost. We see in Acts 2:46 they didn’t just do that once they continued in one accord.

Acts 4:32 Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. They gave their heart and soul to being one for the purposes of the Lord. What is the evidence that was true, they gave their money, all of it – wow – I haven’t seen that happen very much. I have seen a lot of people talk themselves out of giving because they didn’t get 3 lightning strikes while the servant of God or the church suffered. But these people in Acts put all they had on the altar and proved it. If we want to see great things for the kingdom we are going to have to lay down our lives for the Lord and for each other at a new level, the soul level, laying down our desires and will for the unity and purpose of the Lord in the group, then get back because the God that made the mountains smoke and quake, and 3,000 come to the Lord in one meeting will meet with us in a powerful way and revival can’t help but happen.

One of the things that bring this kind of unity or joining is joy. Huh? Nehemiah 8:10…for the joy of the LORD is your strength." One of the meanings of the word joy – Strong’s 2302 is to be joined. There is a God joining in a God joy that we share together. It is a good bonding.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Vines suggests that there is difficulty distinguishing between soul and spirit. They are similar in their nature and in their activities. He says, Generally the spirit is higher and the soul is of a lower element. The spirit may be recognized as the life principal (or force) bestowed on man by God, the soul as the “resulting” life constituted in the individual. The word for spirit is Pneuma and the word for body is Soma. Spirit can be separated from the body but spirit and soul can only be distinguished, he says.

What I believe concerning the Soul:

As I feel the Lord revealed it to me. It is not a doctrine but I feel a revelation that may help some in this area. Remember from previous newsletters the new outpouring that comes like a River of Love by the Holy Spirit through our soul (which must line up with the Lord and be pure) to bring healing to the souls of God’s people for the End Time harvest and equipping.

Spirit – is the life force – the living power that came to us as a piece of God to give us a self-existing life. It came out from God and to “Live” needs to become again a part of God and attach to Him; The branch that needs to be connected back to the vine when we are born again. It can continue separate but exists in a state of death, which is separation from God. In this state of separation it is lifeless and useless. Therefore we crave to find ways to reconnect and remain a part of God though we often don’t recognize those desires for what they are, which means we try to fill them in with other things or pacify them with things that numb them and quiet them. This need to reconnect is by design and is not a defect. We were meant to need both the Lord and each other, anyone who doesn’t is in great error.

The Soul – is a storage tank connected to the spirit life force. It begins to fill at conception, when it is fed by the mother’s emotions, character and other things that surround the mother; from the very beginning. For example it has been proven that reading to a baby in the womb increases the babies intelligence. Reading scripture to a baby in the womb affects the nature of the child. These types of things drastically affects the babies development and fills the new storage tank of the soul for this child, like making imprints in wet clay. This input before birth, as we know, can be negative as well.

This soul develops feeders like blood vessels into people, spirits, and the past. Unhealthy feeders must be broken, severed and sealed off, even after the person or source it connected to is gone or dead because they can continue to feed in via memory, fear, bloodline curses, etc. These ties must be:
  1. Severed by the Blood of Jesus, by rebuking and denouncing them specifically
  2. Sealed off by forgiving and repenting
  3. Replaced with new connectors to the Lord (His bloodline and none other) and healthy relationships with His people, like church.
  4. Guarded with watching and prayer and not allowed to reconnect or return as they often seek to.
[I may do a series soon on recognizing and breaking curses. We cannot just state we break all bloodline curses and boom they are gone. These are woven into the fabric of our lives and must be dealt with specifically and often at different levels at different times. It is a process and that process must be ordered by the Lord and not us.]

Before we get into this section I want to refer back quickly to the story in the first part on the Soul. We saw that instead of 3 different individuals on a journey it was 3 parts of one individual learning to work together as one.

Tom
The Bunny Rabbit     The Soul - Heart, mind, will, emotions, etc.
Wolf
The Wolf                     Survival  – hunter, cravings, instincts, etc.
Simon
The Bear                    The Body

The meaning of their names is significant. Notice that through covenant the Lord changed their name, which in turn started a process to change their nature. Each part of you has a nature and often they are not in harmony. For example you may have both anger and guilt but those emotions pull in opposite directions. Each part of you has to change and discover its God given nature to become the part of the whole (you) that it was destined to be. This doesn’t just happen at salvation but is a process (a journey), and requires revelation knowledge and divine intervention from the Lord. You must know the strengthens and weaknesses of each area. Let’s look at the names and nature changes that are involved. Remember every part of us has a two edged sword type nature, one side shows when we are in unity with ourselves and the Lord and then a completely opposite side when we are not in unity wity ourselves or the Lord.

Simon     (Means to hear and obey or Servant)

The Lord changed Simon’s name (the body) that to Friend and gave an assigned angel to help that transition moving forward. He did not give the assigned angel to Wolf or Tom but only to Simon (the body). We are not to focus on the assigned helper but on the Lord. The assigned helper helps us but ‘works’ for the Lord under His orders only, not ours.

Wolf       (means ravenous hunter)
The Lord 1st changed Wolf’s name (our spirit) to Protector (to watch and pray) and then gave him an assigned angel to help him in that transition. I love what the Wolf/Protector said, he knew the angel would now just be part of the pack. He was not to talk with him but just let him do his job.

Tom        (means divided, doubting, fearful)
He is our soul. His nature must change because he is the connector to our spirit and body and to the Lord. He is the one who listens to the Lord and obeys. He is our innermost being, the Leader of the pack of our spirit, soul and body.  The Lord did not given him a new name or an angel because he is to join with the Lord and share the Lord’s nature and image.

We will talk more about this later but what I want you to see now is if the soul is not healthy and whole it cannot connect. Then this person will be fragmented at best and each part of that person will display opposite character traits spirit, soul and body. The spirit will be a ravening wolf in one way or another, the body will be angry and out of control, the soul will be fearful and divided. Only the Lord can bring healing to our soul by His Holy Spirit and He will and only the Lord can bring us back into unity with ourselves.
SOUL STORAGE TANK
We talked about the soul as a storage tank that begins to fill, not at birth, but at conception. As the Soul Storage Tank fills, our personality develops, our attitude, way of thinking, emotions, desires, feelings, character, will and motives. The soul storage tank itself is formed of many aspects. One is heredity; inherited character traits; blessings and curses, and physical attributes but these just describe the bucket’s shape and form. How we fill that bucket makes the greater difference. The bucket and what it is made of is why two people will respond to the same stimuli differently. For example with the same stimuli (home environment, background, relationships, etc) two children may develop completely opposite personalities, one being angry, and the other being withdrawn. So at some level we need to understand how we are made. Where did we get our initial character traits and soul bucket?

This is also why we must be very careful to only marry the person the Lord tells us to marry because from the clay of this person our children’s buckets will be formed. Asking the Lord who our children are is extremely important, as well as who our spouse is and what their true heart is. It is more than just a good idea; I believe it is a responsibility that we are held accountable for.

The Lord began to show me this as I prayed for my children. How I wished I had sought this out sooner. It would have changed much in my life and in theirs. I discovered my son had the character or soul bucket of his dad. This concerned me because that was not wonderful. But knowing these character traits changed the way I dealt with my son. I began to understand his weaknesses and strengths; I knew that I could not approach something head on with him or he would simply agree to get me to stop and then withdraw. I began to realize with the Lord’s help how dangerous it was to deal with him in certain ways. I began to see how to effectively guide him to fill his bucket and shape it differently. I now had revelation knowledge of how to deal with him but much later than I needed it. God deals with individuals. I couldn’t deal with him in the same manner that I dealt with his sisters. I had to discipline and guide him as an individual for what was best for his development knowing his bucket.

Each one had a different set of character traits from a different source. It affected how they dealt with stimuli and how they reacted to love and discipline. I needed to know that in order to guide the development of that character into something good. There is much to be said on this subject and indeed I have a lengthy teaching on knowing your children and seeking the Lord for how best to deal with and discipline each child.

We know heredity plays a big part in their soul bucket. And often we have at various times seen bits and pieces of this person or that person in the character or expressions of a child. But go deeper. Things like American Indians, Idol Worship, Masonic, heritage from a certain country or area, learn about that area or country, all form part of the bucket for good or bad. For example, I have some American Indian in me, not a great deal but enough that it affected me and had to be dealt with in my bloodline. Was it all bad, no, there are some aspects that were good but the aspect of Spiritism and witchcraft through Shamanism I had to break out of my bloodline and denounce it replacing it with the Bloodline of Jesus Christ.

Another part of their Soul Bucket is their gifts and callings. If someone is called to be a missionary in a rough country and work with harsh situations, you don’t want to pressure them to be the type of person that always wears a suit and is very business like. You will guide them according to the gifts and callings the Lord has for them or it can damage them. How? In one situation of someone who pressured their child to be a certain way because they had hidden hopes and dreams of who they wanted them to be, which was not who this child was by calling at all much damage was done. Though the parent did not criticize the child openly, the child saw the parent’s constant body language of sighs and disappointment. The child developed the feeling of being a loser and a failure. They developed the feeling that God was not pleased with them and they could not live up to what the Lord wanted for them. This affected the child’s walk with the Lord and they eventually left the Christian walk.

Now let’s turn this around. We can see that we need to know our child’s soul bucket, their character, gifts and callings and it will guide us in how to deal with them and pray for them. We can also see we need to know our spouse’s soul bucket (best if we find out before we marry them as it may affect who we marry). It will affect how we deal with them and how we bond with them. How extremely important it is then to know our own soul bucket, character, heredity, gifts and callings.
  • What is your heritage
  • What people groups and cultures
  • Are there things you need to deal with at different levels
  • Things you need to feed and develop that God has entrusted to you.
  • Whose character do you have and what do you see in the one you are like (study them a bit to see)
  • Who did God create you to be (we’ll talk about that more later)
  • What are you gifts and callings
  • Who are you – we need to find out
Knowing your bucket helps deal with what is in your bucket. It helps you know what to remove and what to develop. The Bible says My people die for a lack of knowledge. Know your bucket and deal with it accordingly as the Lord leads you. Know your heritage, character traits, gifts and callings.

Then we need to understand what fills the Soul Storage Tank or Bucket:
  1. Soul ties – beginning from the womb with a soul tie to our parents and grand parents whether we ever came to know them later or not.
    1. A soul that did not get to bond outside of the womb experiences divorce, and a tearing break in their soul, because they did bond inside the womb. They carry the symptoms of abandonment even if they do not live in that state now. This is deeper than rejection but will draw in rejection and similar situations like a magnet because of its nature. If this is never dealt with it will color their life with a feeling of loss, no value and can affect many areas. It will create a ravening wolf (spirit) looking for something to satiate that hunger. This person may deal with the addictions or the cravings this break caused, but usually do not deal with the driving force behind that addiction, the brokenness of the soul, so it will surface in other ways. Healing the soul is a process that most people do not want to submit to but it is the only way to be completely whole.
    2.  There of course are people that did not even bond in the womb. They were not wanted, or a parent was selfish or perhaps the parent knew they couldn’t keep the child so they didn’t bond. This child may respond in several ways, one is a constant feeling of deep rejection even where there is none; they will either strive for attention (at all costs) or fall back in dejection and depression, depending on the heredity (inherited factors) of their soul bucket. They carry a deep loss they will never be able to explain. They have a deep sorrow about them even when they are laughing. They do not trust completely and they crave relationships but because of a deep fear of being hurt they back away from those relationships at key times and often destroy with their own words and attitudes the things they want most. Destruction and trouble are drawn to these people like a magnet because they have a vacuum in their inner being and that is a natural draw to things in the spirit realm, usually things that bring trouble. The Lord can and will recreate and restore their soul bucket that developed deformed. He is the creator and He can recreate.
    3. Soul ties are souls we join with or relationships with strings attached. We may walk away but if the strings are never dealt with they draw us down. That is one of the hardest things to deal with in divorce, we left but we are still attached. In the spirit realm the two become one, so it is like separating Siamese Twins, the closer they joined the deeper the hurt. But just because the covenant was broken doesn’t mean the soul tie is broken. How would you like it if one of your feet went South and one of your feet went North continually. Yikes that would hurt. But if the tie is not dealt with that is exactly what is happening. The part that is tied to the other person is pulled in their direction and you are going another. That brings inner division. Remember in division the parts of our lives that are supposed to be helpful become the opposite and work against us.
    4. Friendships – covenant soul ties, you may break the covenant but the soul tie is still there. 1 Samuel 18:1 Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Perhaps you didn’t intend for that friendship to go that deep but it did and you may now have something to deal with because of it.
    5. Demonic ties – Often because of curiosity or pressure from friends we try things that seem harmless. We walk away and forget the entire thing. But at that point something tied us to the demonic spirit realm. We gave legal access. We need to go back and remove those ties. Things like ouiji boards, fortunetellers, and other mystical things are not innocent and not left behind until we severe them.
    6. Becoming a Member – Have you ever become a member of something. You created a tie. You connected with a group of people. Like a member of a church and then you left angry or hurt. You carry a bad tie you that you need to deal with. Other things are like members of the army, clubs, etc. Are there any you need to break that are connecting you to things that are no longer good or no longer a part of your life?
    7. Family – We have ties with our family whether mother, dad, sister, uncle. Some of these we know are not good but we feel obligated. We need to break those ties. That doesn’t mean be rude to that person or not be in that family, it just means they no longer have a hold on you in a negative way at any level. In some instances the Lord will lay guidelines. You need to be careful to guard you heart and keep these guidelines. When we love a person we receive them differently, with an open heart. That means a vulnerable heart to whatever that person has. For example, let’s say it is a beloved brother who is now in New Age at a deep level. They ooze New Age. You love them, you see them, you hug them with that open heart and yuck, you’re slimed with a curse because they are a carrier. Then later you wonder why you seem to be under spiritual attack. You are more vulnerable to them because you love them and they are linked to you with a tie.
Am I saying don’t love your brother or hug them? No. I am saying being wise. Severe the soul tie, and guard your heart. Plead the Blood of Jesus when you know you will see them and before and after hugging them. Hold back as much as you can and still be loving. Pray for them and love them but use wisdom. You’re not helping anyone to catch a big dose of the curse they have.
  1. People around us – We know that almost all of the people we come in contact with affect us, starting with family, then teachers, pastors, friends, etc. If they are negative or criticizing it fills our bucket with negative things that affect us. Why do you often feel negative about yourself, this may be why. This doesn’t just go away, it has to be dealt with. Perhaps we have piled many things in our bucket on top of these things but they are still there and need to be removed. People who have cursed us with their negative words, anger, attitudes, or actions make a deposit in our lives. We must remove that curse deposit. If it has been there a long time and rooted in, it may require a process because all of the roots must be removed.
    1. A very big aspect of this is forgiving. Perhaps you have tried to forgive and even think you have. The measuring stick the Lord gave me for true forgiveness was this, if you think about it or talk about it, it will not make you feel angry, hurt or upset in any way. If it is still able to stir up your feelings it is not gone. If you turn it over and over in your mind it is not gone. If you have to talk about it then it is not gone.  If you have tried to forgive and you still have the symptoms don’t be discouraged just ask the Lord for a miracle of forgiveness. Don’t put a band-aid on cancer and don’t use a quick I forgive you prayer for deep hurts. Ask the Lord for a miracle of forgiveness and He will give it to you and you will be released from it.
    2. The main way these people still have a hold on you is through you memory. There are many different levels of memory and many different sources but for now we will just talk about thoughts. Memory cannot usually just be removed but must be replaced or sanctified. This is a process. When a memory surfaces that is negative, instead of letting it re-root:
                             i.      rebuke it
ii.      state this is silly, this no longer exists – as a Christian I don’t have a past
iii.      Proclaim: 1John 3:8… For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that, He might destroy the works of the devil, including this memory.
iv.      In this manner you remove bad memories one at a time as they surface. This needs to become a habit.
  1. Our God given Life Traits – remember these traits each have two sides. The one side shows when we are walking in unity with ourselves and the Lord and the other side shows when we are not. One is good and one is negative. Let’s look at just a few to get a general idea.
    1. Warrior                  - argue, never wrong, mental manipulate others (like chess strategies)
    2. Love                      - hate, gossip, unfair, fear, criticize, rebel
    3. Peacemaker       - Meddler, carnal friends, rude, entertainment & partying, wrong fun
    4. Leader                 - Pushy, selfish, proud,
    5. Studious/teach   - Work-o-holic, run-a-way, quiet, shy
    6. Prophet                - Religious, controlling, emotional worshiper, self justified, demanding
    7. The God heritage can be covered over and even lost or disconnected but God can restore it when we let Him. It should be like a circulatory system running to and through us and to and through God.
  2. Blood – What’s in my bloodline?
    1. Inherited Blessings (preachers, missions, prayer warriors, physical strength)
    2. Curses (witchcraft, violence, covenant breakers, health issues)
    3. Inherited memory marks (a person acts like they have been abused but it was really their mother. They inherited traumatic memory marks and were affected by it like afraid of water because their dad almost drowned.)
  3. Inherited –
    1. Character – like mom, dad, grandparents, etc.
    2. Calling
    3. Blessings/curses
    4. Gifting (preaching, evangelism, art, etc.)
    5. From Culture (often a family has their own culture)
    6. From Land (what is in the land good or bad – it soaks into you)
  4. Physical
    1. Bonding
    2. Health good or bad, handicaps, sickness, chemical imbalances, these help form us
    3. Excessive alone time
    4. Mental problems or great intelligence
    5. Environment (poverty/wealth, country, city, etc.)
    6. Discomforts, affliction, lack of safety
  5. External
    1. People negative or positive
    2. Active curses – like a witch that has cursed
    3. Situations like traps, fears, poverty or hopelessness
    4. Culture (remember most country cultures have many local cultures)
    5. Magnets – Things that have happened to you or you inherited that cause something in you that actually draws trouble, people who victimize, broken covenants, etc. to you.) These can be revealed and removed by the blood of Jesus. Some of them are deeper in nature and are called triggers. Triggers are a much deeper and more powerful demonic magnets that must be removed carefully but can still be removed.)
    6. Spirit’s assigned against you, via family, land, things you’ve done, etc.
  6. God’s Plan – Original Blue Print for who you are to be. Your pre-destiny. Most people do not know who they were created to be or who they really are so how can they develop that. All they can see is the effects of what has happened in their life thus far. More often than not that is not their true character or personality but what developed due to what was dumped in their bucket. I heard one minister teach once whatever your character was when you were 2-3 years old is probably the closest to who you really are. Most people don’t remember that though. Ask God who He created you to be. Let Him begin to reveal that to you and help restore that in you. Don’t try to do it yourself or you will get discouraged and feel like a fake. The Lord will restore your true character and help you develop it.

There are probably other areas we could cover but this gives a general idea and overview. A damaged soul restored brings restoration and unity to the whole person. Your soul is like a bucket. What you pour into it remains until it is removed. What you allow in your bucket is either good or brings corruption and can taint other good things in the bucket when added. If you are a minister what is in your bucket is what you will pour out whether your realize it or not. If it is corrupt you can corrupt others. Sometimes we cannot imagine how something that appears to be mixed in can be removed but the Lord is well able to do it and will do it if we allow Him to.

This lays a groundwork for the rest of the teaching on the soul which we will begin to get into in the next newsletter. Please let me hear your comments and feedback. I love to hear from you and it lets me know I am being effective. As we continue with this study we will begin to see who we are spirit, soul and body and how to begin to recognize and develop that in the Lord into something He can use and flow with in His kingdom.
