By Carol J. Warren
Once there was a man who had a can. It was the size of a small coffee can. It once had a plastic lid but the lid had long been lost. Every day the man had to walk through the woods where the ogre lived to fulfill his daily tasks for the Lord. Amazingly the ogre would let him pass and even allow him to come back through the woods safely if he brought the ogre a can full of water.
The man would pour the water in the ogre’s waiting container and leave. Though the ogre was still menacing and scary he would not attack the man if he did this. In this manner the man appeased the ogre to fulfill his daily obligations to the Lord. But one day when the man got up he realized that the can had a hole in it. Yikes! He didn’t have another can or a large enough container so he tried to fix the can. He tried poking things into the hole but that just made the hole bigger. He tried pushing things on top of the hole but nothing worked. Finally as it was getting late the only thing he could think to do was to chew some gum and stick that on the bottom over the hole. As he rushed to the woods he didn’t realize that the can was still slowly leaking all along the way, so when he got to the ogre the can was empty. The ogre was very angry and beat him severely. The ogre refused to let him pass to fulfill his obligations to the Lord, so the man had no choice but to return home. He didn’t know what else to do.
He prayed to the Lord for help and searched for containers but couldn’t find another just like the first one. He tried taking the water in a glass but the ogre acted insulted. He smashed the glass and beat the man until it was all the man could do to run away. So day after day the man sat at home unable to fulfill his obligations to the Lord because he had no container for the water he needed to appease the ogre.
He prayed and prayed ‘for another container’ but the Lord didn’t answer him. Soon he became very discouraged and sad. When he prayed, though he said the same things as before, he looked at the Lord with sad accusing eyes, thinking why doesn’t the Lord help me? Does He not see that I am good and sincere man? Does He not know that I truly want to serve Him? Resentment and bitterness slowly grew in his heart and he didn’t even know it.
Soon he couldn’t even get into the Lord’s presence and it was very hard to worship or draw near at all. The man began to weep and cry out to God. Not being able to work for the Lord was hard but not being able to worship was unbearable. He began to weep and cry out to the Lord continually, all the time wondering why the Lord didn’t help him.
Finally He said, “Lord take everything, take my work for you, take all I own, but restore your presence. Can’t you see I love you sincerely and that all I really want is you and nothing else matters?
Finally the Lord appeared at such a time. He looked at the man and said, “How do you expect to see me when you look through the eyes of the ogre?”
“What?” the man was shocked, “how do I look through the eyes of the ogre Lord?”
“Fool, do you think the ogre was interested in a can full of water?” The Lord asked, “Fool, He’s not interested in beating you up or even keeping you from working for me. He’s after your trust in Me. He knew that one day you would not have the water. He knew that one day you would not be able to come because of fear of him. He knew that then you would call on Me but looking for Me through his eyes of fear and lack, so that you would be unable to see Me or receive from Me. So it appeared to you that I did not care or truly love you when nothing could be further from the truth.”
“He knew in your heart you would ask why as an accusation. When you say why don’t you help me Lord, you are also accusing Me of not loving or caring and of not being good to you.” The Lord looked with a questioning look to be sure the man was understanding. “Your heart began to grow more and more discouraged, bitter and resentful until you couldn’t draw near to me at all. That was the ogre’s goal, not beating you up or keeping you from My work. If he could cause you to doubt My love, and see Me only through your own pain and lack he knew then he had it all because then whatever you do would not be in Me. He was after your trust.”
The man was shocked. “What must I do Lord?” The man asked in desperation. “No matter what else I lose I can’t live without your presence. Take it all but deliver me so I can be in your presence Lord.”
“Take off the ogre’s glasses.” The Lord said, “The glasses fit so snugly that you didn’t even realize you had them on. Ask me to restore your perception and your realty. Then you will be able to remove all the splinters.”
The man reached up and took the glasses off. He didn’t even know they were there. Now he was aware of many slivers and splinters stuck into him, some were infected. “Remove them Lord.” He prayed.
“You remove the lies, accusations, bitterness, deception, resentment and fear one at a time. The man began to carefully work on one splinter at a time. It was painful and some were very deep. Suddenly he couldn’t see them again. What happened? Then he realized the glasses were back on. He began to cry out to the Lord in a panic. “Remove them forever Oh Lord.” He cried.
“You must remove them by rebuking them.” The Lord said, “The many splinters and slivers act like a magnet to draw the glasses back to deceive you and change your perception but you must be wise. Remove the glasses and work on the splinters. When you realize the glasses are back remove them again. Each time you remove more splinters the glasses are weaker until soon if you are diligent over the time it takes, all the splinters will be gone and the glasses will not return.”
The man was not happy that this would be such a long drawn out process but if he really wanted to be in the presence of the Lord and not be deceived that’s what he had to do. So he set to work. He knew the enemy was banking on the fact that he would get discouraged with the process and give up but he was determined not to do that.
It was just as the Lord said, ‘remove the ogre’s glasses of deception that cause you to see only through hurt and lack by rebuking them, then you can see the splinters to remove them. Continue that process until it is all done, no matter how long it takes.’ Now he was finally done. He felt like a new man. He was now able to get into the presence of the Lord and love on the Lord, worshiping Him and receiving His love. Then he would return from the worship to his home but still he couldn’t go through the forest to do the Lord’s work because the ogre was still there.
Finally he asked the Lord when the Lord would remove the ogre so he could go work for the Lord like he was supposed to. The Lord threw back His head and laughed but the man was confused. “Why would you use the ogre’s territory for the doorway to My work? That’s his territory.”
“It’s the only way I know.” The man said.
“Really?” the Lord said, “I AM The Way (the road), The Truth (the water you gave the ogre by way of compromise) and The Life (that life is light that shines to light the way clearly so no darkness can hinder it or snuff it out.) Let Me ask you a question.”
“Yes Lord.” The man said.
“When you are with Me in love and worship do you feel safe and secure?” The Lord asked.
“Yes Lord.” He said, “Very much so.”
“And then when you stop and do things around your house do you feel worry, anxiety, fears?” The Lord asked.
“Well, yes Lord.” The man said hanging his head. “But I’m trying to change.”
“If I am the way, the truth and the life and you feel safe and secure in Me with no fear, why would you leave?” The Lord asked. “You access your work through Me and your home is Me. You don’t need to be affected and hindered by the world, (your current home) and the enemy anymore. Learn to abide in Me, then you will have perfect fellowship with Me and your work will be much more effective.”
The man was surprised. He had never thought about staying in the Lord but the Bible does say to abide in Him. He knew it would be a process and that no matter how long it took he had to stay focused and devoted. At first he couldn’t remain in the Lord’s presence very long at all. Then the Lord showed him that he had learned to let go of things, which left his hands empty but with out replacing it by putting something else in his hands the things he let go of easily returned. So he learned to let go and then quickly turn and latch on to God. In this manner the Lord began to replace more and more where before it was just pushed aside. Then slowly he began to be able to stay in the Lord’s presence longer and longer until finally he did abide in the Lord. Then everything he did flowed from the presence of the Lord.
Comments on the Story
St John Chapter 14 has 4 verses that explain God’s plan for us clearly. Please remember in each of these verses this is Jesus talking.
NKJ John 14:3 "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
NKJ John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
NKJ John 14:20 "At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
NKJ John 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
How often we find ourselves defeated or beaten up by the enemy. Funny when the ‘enemy’ does that to us, often without realizing it we look at the Lord with accusing eyes. If you really loved me Lord you wouldn’t have let that happen or you would deliver me now. But it was the enemy who did it not God. The Lord is waiting for us. Our heart prays whether our mouth does or not. Can you imagine what our heart is saying when we feel like that.
Notice we think the enemy just wants to hurt us and that he is the obstacle. But really our perception of looking at things only through our lack and our pain is the real problem. When we complain, accuse the Lord or walk in condemnation or bitterness we take the weapons out of the hands of our angels. Is it any wonder our prayers are ineffective. And then to top it all off in our heart we blame the Lord.
The Lord could not honor the man’s prayers for a can because that was a wrong prayer. But notice when the Lord reveals the strategy of the enemy. I was surprised when the Lord used the word fool in talking to the man in this story. That was harsh to me. But sometimes we need a shock to wakeup. If the enemy causes you to lose your trust he has it all, your work, well being, everything. And though it is a process to rebuke the lies and accusations and work on the problems we need to remain diligent. Use the 3 R’s Repent – Rebuke and Restore, for the splinters you discover during the process. Keeping it going is really up to us. Wow we want to lay all the blame and responsibility on a loving God who is patiently waiting for us.
Do we try to access the Lord’s work through the ogre’s territory? The enemy easily uses the world and the things of the flesh. We can only access the Lord’s work correctly through His presence and that also is a process we must be diligent to press into and remain in.
So I want to ask you, ‘How is your love relationship with the Lord?’ Maybe if you are having trouble getting into His presence that is a warning signal for you to check your reality and perception. Are you only looking at the Lord through your pain and lack? That’s the glasses of the enemy. The Lord is near to help us through it. He is faithful and patient and His Mercy Endures forever.
Amen.
